Settle a trip in the fewest transfers

Log every expense once: who paid, how much, and who it was for. The calculator works out what each person paid and owes, then finds the smallest set of payments that gets everyone even, so five friends don't need a dozen bank transfers.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere, so the trip is gone when you close the page; sharing happens only when you tap Share or Copy.

How the settle-up works

  1. 01

    Log who paid for what

Add everyone on the trip, then each expense with who paid it. Split it equally between the people it was for, by shares (a couple can count as 2), or by exact amounts.

  2. 02

    See every balance

Each person's balance is what they paid minus their share of everything. Positive means money comes back to them, negative means they owe, and the balances always add up to zero.

  3. 03

    Settle in the fewest transfers

The calculator finds people whose balances cancel each other out and settles each such group on its own. That takes the fewest payments, and you make them however you already do.

A worked trip

Four friends, five expenses, and a couple of people sitting some of them out.

Chris$120.00$300.00-$180.00
Dana$200.00$180.00+$20.00

The fewest transfers

  1. Bella pays Dana$20.00
  2. Chris pays Alex$180.00

2 transfers settle all 5 expenses. Paying everyone back directly, one person at a time, would take 6.

Questions about settling up

How does the calculator work out who owes whom?

It adds up what each person paid and what their share of every expense comes to. Paid minus share is their balance: positive means they get money back, negative means they owe. Then it finds the fewest payments that bring every balance to zero.

How can fewer transfers settle the same trip?

Debts often cancel out. If Bella owes Alex and Alex owes Chris, Bella can pay Chris directly. A group can always settle in one transfer fewer than the number of people with a balance, and in fewer still when part of the group evens out on its own. The calculator checks every way to split the group like that and picks the one with the fewest transfers, exactly, for up to 20 people.

Can I split an expense unequally?

Yes. Split it equally between the people it was for, by shares (a couple can count as 2, or adults as 2 and children as 1), or by exact amounts that add up to the expense. Any odd cent from an equal split goes round the group, so it doesn't always land on the same person.

Which currencies can I use?

Any one of the nine the ShareDues app supports: US dollar, euro, British pound, Indonesian rupiah, Japanese yen, Singapore dollar, Australian dollar, Malaysian ringgit and Thai baht. The calculator keeps a trip in one currency; the ShareDues app handles all nine, with exchange rates refreshed daily.

Is my trip saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is stored or sent to ShareDues, and closing the page clears it. Your settle-up leaves the page only when you tap Share or Copy.

Does ShareDues send the money?

No. ShareDues never touches your money. You pay each other the way you already do, by bank transfer, e-wallet or cash; the calculator only tells you who pays whom and how much.

What does the ShareDues app add?

The calculator settles a trip in one sitting. The app keeps the tab running while you travel: add expenses as they happen, watch the balances update as you go, and let settle-up find the fewest transfers across all your circles at once. Splitting in the app is free, and it never touches your money either.

Planning the next trip?

Let the app keep the tab

The calculator settles a trip once it's over. ShareDues keeps a running tab while you travel, and for your housemates and Friday dinners too, and never touches your money: you pay each other the way you already do.

  • Fewest transfers

One tap finds the fewest payments that settle every expense across all your circles at once.

  • Nine currencies

Daily exchange rates, so a trip paid in baht, ringgit and rupiah still adds up.

  • Type it, it's split

Type "dinner 84, four of us" and AI turns it into a split you can tweak before it posts.
