Split bill calculator

Add what everyone ordered and who shared what. The calculator shares out the tax, service charge and any discount in proportion, so nobody pays for someone else's steak, then rounds each share and writes the message for your group chat.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere; sharing happens only when you tap Share or Copy.

How the fair split works

  1. 01

    Add people and items

List everyone at the table, then add each item from the receipt and tap who had it. A shared plate splits evenly between the people you tap.

  2. 02

    Add service, tax and discounts

Enter the percentages printed on the receipt. Discounts and promo codes come off first, then the service charge is added, then tax: the order most receipts use. Untick the tax-on-service box if your receipt taxes the food only.

  3. 03

    Everyone pays their share

Each person's share of the discount, service charge and tax follows their share of the food, so nobody subsidises anybody. Round the shares to something easy to pay and send the list to the group.

Questions about splitting

How do I split a bill with tax and service charge?

Add each item to the people who had it. The calculator takes discounts off first, adds the service charge, then tax, and gives each person the same share of those extras as their share of the food. If your food is 30% of the subtotal, you pay 30% of the service charge and the tax.

Should tax and service be split equally or by what each person ordered?

By what each person ordered is fairer. A service charge and a tax are percentages of the food, so whoever ordered more caused more of both; splitting them equally makes the light eater subsidise everyone else. To split the whole bill equally instead, mark every item as shared by everyone.

How does the rounding work?

Pick a step, such as the nearest 1,000 rupiah or the nearest baht. Each share is rounded so that the shares still add up to the bill rounded to the same step. Whatever is left over is shown as the rounding difference, which usually stays with whoever paid.

Which currencies can I use?

The same nine as the ShareDues app: US dollar, euro, British pound, Indonesian rupiah, Japanese yen, Singapore dollar, Australian dollar, Malaysian ringgit and Thai baht. Rupiah and yen have no cents, so they are calculated in whole units.

How do discounts and promo codes work?

Add each discount as an amount or a percentage. Discounts come off the subtotal before the service charge and tax, and everyone gets a share of the saving in proportion to what they ordered.

Is my bill saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is stored or sent to ShareDues, and it keeps working if you lose signal after the page has loaded. Your split leaves the page only when you tap Share or Copy.

Do I need an account or an app?

No. The calculator is free to use and needs no signup. If you split with the same people again and again, the ShareDues app keeps a running balance for the group, so nobody has to remember who covered last time.

What does the ShareDues app do that the calculator doesn't?

The calculator settles one bill. The app keeps score across all of them: it tracks who owes whom over a trip or a month, finds the fewest transfers to settle everyone, handles nine currencies with daily exchange rates, and turns a typed sentence like "dinner 84, four of us" into a split. ShareDues never touches your money; you pay each other the way you already do.

Same group every week?

Let the app keep score

The calculator settles one bill. ShareDues keeps a running tab for your housemates, your trip or your Friday dinners, and never touches your money: you pay each other the way you already do.

  • Fewest transfers

One tap finds the fewest payments that settle every bill in the group, across all your circles at once.

  • Any currency

Nine currencies with daily exchange rates, so a trip split in baht, ringgit and rupiah still adds up.

  • Type it, it's split

Type "dinner 84, four of us" and AI turns it into a split you can tweak before it posts.

ShareDues is invite-only on Android while we polish. Email us and your Google Play early access lands within a couple of days; iOS folks, the same email gets you the launch news. Splitting in the app is free.
