The monthly bills
This percentage of rent is split equally per person. The rest follows weighted room size. Use 0 for all room-based, or 100 for all per-person.
Changing currency keeps your numbers; it does not convert them.
Rooms and roommates
Use square feet or square metres consistently. Enter each bedroom once, even if two people share it. Shared bathrooms and balconies belong in the shared-space portion.
Up to 12 rooms and 20 people.
Monthly split updated. Household total: $3,300.00. Room A: $1,220.00; Room B: $1,100.00; Room C: $980.00
Your monthly split
| Room name | Shared space | Room & features | Utilities | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Room A | $400.00 | $720.00 | $100.00 | $1,220.00 |
| Room B | $400.00 | $600.00 | $100.00 | $1,100.00 |
| Room C | $400.00 | $480.00 | $100.00 | $980.00 |
| Household total | $1,200.00 | $1,800.00 | $300.00 | $3,300.00 |
The shared-space pool rounds half up to the smallest currency unit; the rest is room-based rent. Every column adds up exactly. Leftover smallest units go to the largest fractional remainders; ties follow room and person order. Within a shared room, each component is split equally, so totals may differ by a few smallest units.
How the rent split works
- 01
Set aside shared space
Choose the percentage of rent for the kitchen, living room and other shared space. That pool is divided by headcount, so a couple pays two per-person shares.
- 02
Weight the bedrooms
Room score = area × (1 + selected feature percentages). The remaining rent follows each room’s score divided by all room scores. Occupants of the same room divide its share equally.
- 03
Add utilities separately
Equal mode follows headcount. Usage mode follows the room-wide usage weights you enter. For bills with different rules, calculate each utility separately and combine the results.
A worked rent split
Three roommates each have a room. Monthly rent is 3,000 and utilities are 300 in one currency. Assign 40% of rent to shared space: 1,200, or 400 each. The remaining 1,800 follows the bedroom scores.
Room A has area 20 and a private bathroom weighted at 20%, so its score is 24. Room B has area 16 and a balcony weighted at 25%, so its score is 20. Room C has area 16 and no selected features, so its score is 16. Scores total 60. Equal utilities add 100 each.
| Room | Score | Shared space | Room & features | Utilities | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Room A | 24 | $400.00 | $720.00 | $100.00 | $1,220.00 |
| Room B | 20 | $400.00 | $600.00 | $100.00 | $1,100.00 |
| Room C | 16 | $400.00 | $480.00 | $100.00 | $980.00 |

Questions about splitting rent
How do I split rent by room size?
Choose how much rent covers shared space, split that pool equally per person, then divide the rest by each room’s area score. Set all feature weights to zero for a size-only comparison. Use one consistent area unit.
How much extra should a private bathroom, balcony or parking cost?
There is no universal percentage. Agree on weights with your roommates. This calculator adds the selected percentages to each room’s area score and allocates a fixed rent total across those scores. A 20% feature weight does not mean paying 20% of the whole rent extra.
How does it handle couples sharing a room?
Enter the bedroom once and set its occupant count to two. They pay two shared-space shares and divide their room’s private-rent portion equally. Equal utilities count each person; usage utilities follow the room’s total usage.
Can I split utilities by usage?
Yes. Select room usage and enter comparable measurements or agreed weights for every room. A weight of zero pays none. At least one weight must be positive when the utility bill is greater than zero. Use separate calculations for utilities with different allocation rules.
Will the rent and utilities add up exactly?
Yes. Calculations use integer smallest currency units, with leftover units assigned by largest remainder. Every result column reconciles to its bill. Rupiah and yen use whole units; the other supported currencies use two decimal places.
Can this calculator save a recurring reminder?
The web calculator handles one monthly split and does not save reminders. Creating recurring bills with reminders is a ShareDues Premium feature in the app. Splitting in the app is free, and Android early access is invite-only.
