Comparison
Splitwise alternatives: free plans compared
Splitwise's free plan lets each person add up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026[1]. That's plenty for two housemates splitting groceries, but on a group trip where one person logs everything, the day's allowance can run out before dinner. Here are the free alternatives worth a look, what each does best, and where ShareDues, the app behind this guide, fits in.
The short answer
- Free, with no ads and no limits, on iPhone and Android: Tricount[7][9].
- Lots of currencies, works offline, no signup: Splid, which converts between more than 150 currencies[10].
- Phone or browser: Settle Up, which runs on iPhone, Android and the web[12].
- No usage caps, on Android: ShareDues, the app behind this guide. Splitting is free, it handles SGD, MYR, IDR and THB with daily exchange rates, and one tap works out the fewest transfers that settle everyone. It's in invite-only early access for now.
- One trip, no app: our free trip settle-up calculator works out who pays whom in your browser, with no signup.
Plans change. Everything this guide says about other apps comes from their own websites and help pages, read in October 2026 and listed under Sources. Check them before you decide.
What the Splitwise free limit is
As of October 2026, Splitwise's help centre says free users can add up to 4 expenses each day, and that Splitwise Pro removes the limit[1]. Its article on the limit suggests waiting for it to reset, or asking a friend to add the expense and mark it as paid by you[2].
That works because the allowance belongs to whoever adds an expense, not whoever paid it. So the cap bites hardest when one person keeps the books for the group: log the hotel, the ferry, the airport transfer and lunch, and dinner has to wait for tomorrow's allowance or for someone else to add it.
Splitwise Pro also adds search, charts, default splits and currency conversion, and removes ads[3]. If each person only adds a few expenses a day, the free plan may be all you need. And for one big trip, Splitwise's annual Pro plans include a Trip Pass that gives one trip group's members Pro features for 30 days[1].

Splitting a trip in Southeast Asia
A trip in the region can cross currencies quickly. A weekend from Singapore to Johor Bahru runs on SGD and MYR, and a Bali trip might be booked in your home currency and spent in rupiah. Check how an app handles that before the group starts logging.
On Splitwise's free plan, a group that spends in two currencies sees two separate balances, and converting them into one is a Pro feature[5]. Its Simplify Debts setting, which cuts the number of payments, also works within each currency separately[6].
Tricount shows the trip total in one currency[8], Splid converts amounts automatically[10], and Settle Up fetches each day's exchange rate for an expense in another currency[13].
ShareDues supports nine currencies: the Singapore dollar, Malaysian ringgit, Indonesian rupiah, Thai baht, Japanese yen, Australian dollar, US dollar, euro and British pound, with exchange rates refreshed daily. Each circle can have its own currency. It doesn't support the Philippine peso or the Vietnamese dong, so for a trip that spends those, pick an app whose currency list includes them.
Whichever app keeps score, the money moves the way it already does in the region: a bank transfer, an e-wallet, a QR payment or cash. ShareDues never touches it; it only tells you who pays whom.
The alternatives, one by one
Tricount
As of October 2026, Tricount's own site sums it up as free, with no ads and no limits[7]. It runs on iPhone and Android[9], tracks costs in more than one currency, and can import your existing Splitwise group expenses so you don't have to type them in again[8]. For a mixed iPhone and Android group that wants a free shared ledger today, it's the closest like-for-like swap.
One thing to know: Tricount's FAQ says its old Premium plan has ended, and in-app export to CSV and PDF went with it, though support can still send you a CSV or ODF export[9].
Splid
Splid's site says it's free, needs no signup, works offline and converts between more than 150 currencies[10]. That suits a long trip across several countries, or a group that would rather not make accounts. It exports summaries as PDF files[10]; its app listing sells Excel export and extra groups as in-app purchases[11].
Settle Up
Settle Up runs on Android, iPhone and the web, and says it keeps the number of payments to a minimum[12]. Its tips page describes optional Group Premium and exchange rates that you can edit[13]. It's worth a look if someone in the group would rather use a browser than install an app.
ShareDues
ShareDues is the app behind this guide, so weigh this part with that in mind. Splitting is free with no usage caps: unlimited circles and expenses, in any of its nine currencies. ShareDues Premium is an optional subscription that adds power tools such as receipt scanning and recurring bills.
What it does: one tap works out the fewest transfers that settle every expense in all your circles at once. A debt loop (you owe Bella, Bella owes Chris, Chris owes you) can be cancelled with everyone's approval: each balance drops by the same amount, and nobody sends money. You can add an expense by typing a sentence such as “Grab was 60k, split with Maya” and check the split before it posts. Friends who aren't on the app yet can still be tracked; when they join, they choose whether to claim that history. The app is available in ten languages, including Indonesian, Thai, Malay and Vietnamese.
The catch: ShareDues is Android-only for now, in invite-only early access, with iOS in the works. If half your group is on iPhone and wants to add expenses themselves, Tricount or Splid will serve you better today[9][10].
Or skip the app for a one-off trip
If you only need to settle one trip, you may not need an account at all. In our trip settle-up calculator, add each expense, who paid and who it was for, split equally, by shares or by exact amounts, and it finds the fewest transfers that settle the group. It runs in your browser, saves nothing and works in any one of the nine currencies per trip. For a single restaurant bill with service charge and GST or SST, the split bill calculator shares the extras out in proportion to what each person ordered.
How to switch without losing track
- Settle up first if you can. Pay each other and record those payments in the app you're leaving, so the new one starts from zero.
- Otherwise, carry over the balances, not the history. Enter each debt as one opening expense, paid by the person who is owed and split entirely to the person who owes. Check that everyone's balance matches the old app, and keep a copy of the old history.
- Look for an import. Tricount can import your Splitwise group expenses[8]. Check what the new app can bring over before you type in a long history.
- Agree how you'll pay each other. Whichever app keeps score, the money still moves by bank transfer, e-wallet, QR or cash.
Questions and answers
What is the Splitwise free limit?
As of October 2026, Splitwise's help centre says free users can add up to 4 expenses each day, and Splitwise Pro removes the limit[1]. Until it resets, a friend can add an expense for you and mark it as paid by you[2].
Is there a free Splitwise alternative with no limits?
Yes. As of October 2026, Tricount describes itself as free, with no ads and no limits[7]. ShareDues has no usage caps on splitting either, but for now it's Android-only, in invite-only early access.
What are the best apps like Splitwise for travelling in Southeast Asia?
It depends on your currencies and your phones. ShareDues handles SGD, MYR, IDR and THB with daily exchange rates and settles in the fewest transfers, but it's Android-only and invite-only for now. For a mixed iPhone and Android group, Tricount runs on both[9]. Splid converts between more than 150 currencies and works offline[10], so it's the safer pick for a trip that spends Philippine pesos or Vietnamese dong, which ShareDues doesn't support.
Can I move my Splitwise groups to another app?
Tricount can import Splitwise group expenses[8]. For other apps, settle up first, or carry each person's balance over as a single opening expense and check the totals against the old app.
Is ShareDues free?
Splitting is free, with no usage caps on circles or expenses, in any of its nine currencies. ShareDues Premium is an optional subscription that adds power tools such as receipt scanning and recurring bills.
Does ShareDues handle the payments?
No. ShareDues never touches your money. It works out who owes whom, and you pay each other the way you already do, by bank transfer, e-wallet or cash, then mark it as paid.
Can I use ShareDues on iPhone?
Not yet. ShareDues is in invite-only early access on Android, and iOS is in the works. Ask for early access below: Android users get an invite, and iPhone users get the launch news.
